Praxis Testing Series
In addition to completing the requirements of the professional teacher education, including clinical practice, students desiring licensure in South Carolina must pass specific areas of the PRAXIS Examination.
Please contact Katie Gabbert, Student Services Coordinator, gabbertkk@cofc.edu, if you have any questions about what Praxis Tests you are required to take.
PRAXIS Core (Academic Skills for Educators) is the academic skills assessment test and is required for all students entering a teacher training program. All undergraduate majors must complete the Praxis Core (reading, writing, and mathematics). Please view the "Tests Required for All Licensure Areas", Entrance to an Educator Preparation Program for Praxis Core test requirements. Test scores must be sent directly to CofC (code 5113) and the South Carolina Department of Education (code 8108).
You do NOT need to take Praxis Core if you earned minimum SAT or ACT scores. Please click here to see whether you need to take Praxis Core based on your SAT or ACT scores. You can view more information and study materials for the Praxis Core here. This test is required for formal admission to the Teacher Education Program and it is highly suggested that students complete this test the same year they take EDFS 201.
The Praxis PLT (Principals of Learning and Teaching) test focuses on the basic principles of learning and teaching that are essential for running a classroom. These principles are drawn from the theoretical foundations provided by key educational theorists and developmental psychologists. The content categories are Students as Learners; Instructional Process; Assessment; Professional Development, Leadership, and Community; and Analysis of Instructional Scenarios. Please view the "Tests Required for All Licensure Areas" to view the Principals of Learning and Teaching test requirements. Students should complete this test by graduation in order to recommend a student for certification.
PRAXIS II is the subject assessment tests required for professional licensure. The subject assessments measure candidates' knowledge of their subject as well as pedagogical skills and knowledge. Please view the "Tests Required for Specific Licensure Areas" to view which test is required. Students should complete this test by graduation in order to recommend a student for certification.
Test scores must be sent directly to CofC (code 5113) and the South Carolina Department of Education (code 8108). For more information on the requirements for licensure in South Carolina, visit the South Carolina State Department of Education website.
