Message from the Chair

Anne Gutshall HeadshotWelcome to the Department of Teacher Education at the College of Charleston. We are a long standing and experienced department with a dedicated and caring faculty. We believe that preparing the next generation of educators requires fostering students’ empathy and relationship skills alongside first rate instruction in cutting edge teaching techniques. We aspire to help our majors become child advocates who care deeply about all students and who incorporate innovative pedagogy and technology to meaningfully educate the whole child for a diverse and ever changing world.

We have undergraduate initial licensure programs in early childhood, elementary, middle grades, secondary education, physical education, foreign language and special education as well as graduate level initial licensure programs in early childhood, elementary, middle grades education and performing arts. Additionally, we have several graduate programs at the master’s degree level including Science and Math for Teachers (SMFT) and Teaching Learning and Advocacy (MTLA), a shared Master’s Degree in Languages and several post licensure certification programs including Gifted and Talented Education and English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).

Students in our department are active in the College of Charleston community through our academic and co-curricular endeavors with the Teaching Fellows, Teacher Leaders, Call Me Mister Program and many additional service-learning, study abroad and collaborative research projects with faculty. Our Office of Student Services and Credentialing (OSSC) assists our students with completing the requirements for teacher certification post-graduation and serves as a link between our programs and the local school systems ensuring high quality and ample experiences to prepare and practice teaching prior to graduation. Alumni of the Department of Teacher Education are sought after in the local area as exceptionally well prepared to teach in South Carolina’s schools and beyond. Our alumni are employed in all facets of the education field including administration, counseling, curriculum, social work and many attend graduate school in a variety of disciplines.

I invite you to explore our website to learn more about our Department and the opportunities we offer our students. If you are not yet a student at the College of Charleston and are planning to visit the campus, we would be happy to arrange for you to sit in on one of our classes or to meet with some of our students or faculty.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions about the department. You can reach out to me at gutshalla@cofc.edu or our associate department chair, Dr. Laura Brock at brockll@cofc.edu or visit our offices at 86 Wentworth Street.
